Vintage Handmade
Jou & Uba
from the Legend of Takasago
a traditional Noh play
involving a loving & long married couple
Bodies of figures, as much as I
can see are wood. Gofun finish, I believe or
something to appear as such, on faces.
Features are delicately carved with open eyes
and Uba's (woman) mouth.
All the clothing is made of beautiful woven cloth.
These were acquired from an estate
of world travelers.
Sadly, unlike many of their
souvenirs these were not dated.
There is a paper tag on Jou's (male) back
with Japanese characters.
Jou is 7 1/8" tall.
He possesses his rake made of painted wood.
He is missing one eyebrow and has
small chips of the gofun on his head.
His forehead hair knot is loosening.
His face is not cracked. The lines in the
pic are his hair.
Uba is 6 3/4" tall.
Here broom is present.
Their hair is a little wild.
Some soiling visible on the lighter
colored fabric.
They both must have been attached to a
platform. There are pointed wooden sticks
that extend past the feet.
